Meaningful Digital Experiences Research Lab

Future-forward, at its finest

The Meaningful Digital Experiences Research Lab (MDXR LAB), housed within the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Monmouth University, is dedicated to exploring how digital technologies can serve as one of many meaningful options in speech and language therapy, and education. Through rigorous research and innovative projects, the MDXR LAB works to better understand when and how digital tools can be used effectively and when they might not be the best choice. We aim to equip clinicians and educators with informed perspectives and practical strategies so they can thoughtfully integrate digital options where they fit.

A blueprint for success

Directed by Monmouth University Associate Professor Erik X. Raj, with important contributions from Monmouth University students and external volunteers, MDXR LAB thrives on collaboration. We believe that fully understanding how digital technologies might support individuals requires a wide range of perspectives. For this reason, we’re intentional about engaging with multiple stakeholders, including youth, parents, clinicians, educators, and more. This collective approach underscores the power of teamwork and the remarkable impact that can be achieved when diverse talents and viewpoints converge toward a shared goal.

How we operate

Whenever appropriate, we happily let children take the lead and shape our understanding of what matters to them. As caring adults, we know we naturally see the world through adult eyes, which is why we place great value on making intentional efforts to view experiences through the eyes of a child. The world of therapy and education can sometimes feel routine or lack excitement, but we aim to change that through purposeful play that is firmly grounded in speech and language goals and educational growth.

Where we can be found

The MDXR LAB is housed inside of the Monmouth University Graduate Center (185 NJ-36, Building C, West Long Branch, NJ 07764), located along New Jersey’s vibrant Jersey Shore. The lab operates within Monmouth University’s Center for Speech and Language Disorders. This strategic location fosters a symbiotic relationship that offers the distinctive advantage of being continually inspired by the remarkable progress and stories of the center’s clients. The energy of the Jersey Shore community and the lived experiences of local individuals infuse each MDXR LAB research endeavor with real-world relevance and an empathy-driven commitment to innovation.

Beyond the Jersey Shore

We make a deliberate choice to extend our work beyond the physical walls of the MDXR LAB and into the broader community. We actively seek partnerships with organizations, programs, and communities across a wide range of settings. This outward focus allows us to explore how digital experiences might meaningfully support communication and connection in environments where they are often not traditionally used. By engaging with partners in schools, community centers, therapy programs, recreational spaces, and beyond, we gain valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges that arise when digital tools are introduced into diverse contexts.

Highly sought after

Past student members of the MDXR LAB have consistently demonstrated the exceptional training and practical experience they received by becoming accomplished speech-language pathologists, educators, and digital technology consultants. These dedicated individuals have secured sought-after positions within prominent public and private schools, healthcare settings, and technology-driven organizations. Through conducting literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data, exploring and designing digital experiences, and more, MDXR LAB members develop valuable skills that are highly desirable to employers.

Curious and passionate

We’re always excited to connect with students who share a passion for digital technology and research. If you’re driven by 21st-century curiosity and eager to make a meaningful impact in the fields of speech-language pathology and education, the MDXR LAB is the place for you. We believe that every idea has the potential to bring something valuable to the table, and we welcome diverse perspectives and creative thinking in all our work. Come to our conference

The MDXR LAB proudly presents Valid Gains Through Video Games (VGTVG). Founded in 2023 by Erik X. Raj, this conference is hosted each February at Monmouth University. VGTVG is dedicated to exploring how video games can be thoughtfully infused into education and therapy to support speech, language, and communication growth. VGTVG brings together educators, speech-language pathologists, healthcare providers, private practitioners, and video game designers to spark conversations and share ideas about the unique ways video game experiences can foster learning and connection. Through inspiring invited speakers and engaging poster presentations, participants gain research-based insights, practical strategies, and fresh perspectives on how to harness the power of games to help students, clients, and patients “level up” in both education and the “game of life.
